Main tasks |
Researcher B wanted to produce a map of contemporary deprivation on the Isle
of Wight. At the time of his study in 2007, the Index of Deprivation 2004 (ID2004) was the
latest index in use by the Department of Communities and Local Government. These data have only
been produced at the level of Super Output Areas (SOA) and were freely available for download.
As an academic researcher, Researcher B was able to download SOA boundaries from the UKBORDERS
service. The index and boundary datasets were imported to ArcGIS, the GIS/mapping software
available at his university. SOA codes were used to link the ID2004 deprivation data to the
corresponding area boundaries. The GIS software offers many options for controlling the shading
and appearance of the map.

Hints, Tips and References |
Hints & Tips |
Users should be aware that the ID2004 only covers England. Different
‘official’ deprivation indexes have been produced for different parts of the UK and
the government department responsible for these has often changed between versions. For
example, the 2000 English version was called the ‘Index of Multiple Deprivation 2000’
and published by the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister. Due to changes in input data and
methodology, these different indexes are not directly comparable over time.
